Second Nijmegen Congress: The Clinic Real Estate of the Next Generation

Following the positive feedback in 2019, the clinic real estate event was held for the second time at the Radboud Universitair Medisch Centrum in Nijmegen, Netherlands, on February 19, 2020. Drees & Sommer was co-host of the congress.

The program focused on the challenges of innovation in hospital construction, the patient-centered design of clinics and the New Campus Erasmus Rotterdam project. The international scope with speakers from Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands provided an excellent view of the bigger picture. An example of this was the workshop on patient rooms, which examined both the Dutch and German perspectives.

During the afternoon walking tours, participants visited the new building at Radboud Universitair Medisch Centrum and the usage of a cyclotron. Cyclotrons are used in medical applications, for example to produce radionuclides for diagnostic purposes, such as positron emission tomography (PET). Many of the radionuclides used in this way have very short half-lives, from minutes to a few hours. This makes it impossible to transport them over long distances: the radionuclides must be produced close to the place where they are to be applied.

The next Clinic Real Estate Congress will take place in the Austrian city of Salzburg on March 24, 2020.
