Cooperation on course of success: Drees & Sommer and Cyril Sweett win a major appointment from the Scottish Government

10.10.2005

In an international tender process led by the Scottish Executive, Drees & Sommer Infra Consult & Management together with their UK alliance partner Cyril Sweett, succeeded in securing an appointment against strong regional and international competition for programme management of a portfolio of major transport projects in Scotland. The projects represent a financial investment totalling approximately 3 billion Euros and are planned to be completed by 2011.

As a result of the commission, Ralf Schwiede, Deputy Chairman of Drees & Sommer AG, sees the strategy of opening up new markets with their alliance partner as being right on course. Schwiede stated: "With this appointment we are already ahead of the targets jointly set with Cyril Sweett for the year 2005".

Decision making factors for the appointment of Drees & Sommer and Cyril Sweett were the combination of specific technical expertise, with their many years of experience in the railway sector, together with regional knowledge and specially developed tools for programme and cost control and for fast project communications.

Francis Ives, Chairman of Cyril Sweett said "We are proud to be selected for this prestigious project and excited about being able to combine our UK experience with our partner
Drees & Sommer's experience of working in German rail."

The appointment comprises programme management for schemes involving:

. revitalising three previously closed railway lines (Airdrie-Bathgate, Larkhall-Milngavie and Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine).
. modernising and extending the Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station and Haymarket Railway Station
. two additional new railway lines for the connection of the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow to their respective airports (Glasgow Airport Rail Link and Edinburgh Airport Rail Link)
. a new line between Edinburgh and Galashiels located to the south (The Borders Railway) and
. two new tramlines in Edinburgh (Edinburgh Tram Lines 1&2)
All these individual projects are substantially funded by the Scottish Government.
In summary, the challenge for the programme managers is to coordinate the interfaces between the individual schemes and support the overall management and reporting of programme, cost, quality and funding provided by the Scottish Government.

With this major transport appointment Drees & Sommer and the UK construction consultancy Cyril Sweett see the opportunity to accelerate the achievement of their long-term global targets.
