Project management for Böblingen District Hospital

06.07.2006

The examination and treatment building at Böblingen District Hospital has been upgraded and remodeled, and the Children's Clinic has been restructured by the addition of new buildings. Since 1999, Drees & Sommer has been supporting the project providing comprehensive project management and with the key task of securing project organization, costs and schedules for the client.

Schedule management

As a result of efficient management of the architectural competition and planning phase, it was possible to start construction in August 2002. In order not to impair the delivery of medical services and to meet the hospital's economic requirements, the extension and modernization work was carried out in several phases with the hospital in full operation. The aim was to complete construction work by June 2006.
To achieve this, the project managers had to find solutions to ensure adherence to the first milestones established by Drees & Sommer. Completion deadlines were ensured by various measures including combining multiple small phases of the upgrade into a single construction phase in coordination with the clinic. This allowed greater efficiency without a big impact on hospital operations. Intensive control within the team and coordination with planners and the client ensured on-schedule completion of the project.

Controlling costs

Drees & Sommer's task included ensuring adherence to the budget for extension and upgrading. Originally, it was only intended to remodel the Children's Clinic, but in 2000 the client and the State of Baden-Württemberg decided to build a new clinic. Despite the long duration of the project, the costs diverged only a small amount from the 2000 costing - and the project was completed within the approved budget of EUR 50.6 million.
As in the case of schedule management, close cooperation between the project team and the client played a key role in cost control. Unforeseen cost increases - resulting, for example, from non-visible problems with building fabric and from several company insolvencies - were balanced out by savings in other areas. Working with the hospital and planners, Drees & Sommer developed simple, practicable solutions to exploit savings potential and thus stay within budget.
