Today German Chancellor Angela Merkel, German Rail Chairman Hartmut Mehdorn, Federal Minister of Transport Wolfgang Tiefensee and the Prime Minister of the State of Baden-Württemberg finalized financing of the project in Berlin, thus giving the green light for the Stuttgart 21 project and the new Stuttgart - Ulm track.
Drees & Sommer Infra Consult and Development Management has been commissioned to undertake project management for both projects. The total cost of the two projects is just under EUR 4.8 billion, with construction currently planned to start in 2010. Drees & Sommer Infra Consult and Development Management has been working on the project since 1994. The Stuttgart 21 megaproject involves the restructuring of the Stuttgart railway node, a 57 km rail network with 33 km of tunnel, and a new sunken central station. Stuttgart Airport and the new Stuttgart Trade Fair Centre will also be linked. The project also includes new holding sidings in Untertürk-
heim. Some 100 hectares of railway lines will be removed, with the area being freed up for urban development. The Gäu line will be replaced by a link to the new central station via Stuttgart Airport with the new Rohr line. A total of just under EUR 2.8 billion has been budgeted for the project. At the same time as Stuttgart 21, the line high-speed line between Wendlingen and Ulm will be upgraded. As a result, travel time from Ulm to Stuttgart will be reduced to 28 minutes. Another aspect of the project is a freight train link in Wendlingen and widening of the bridge over the Danube. The investment volume is EUR 2 billion, including EUR 16 million for the Danube bridge.
