With professional energy consulting and long-term experience from numerous major projects, the Stuttgart-based energy managers from DS-Plan developed an energy-saving concept for the modernization of the HUK Coburg building on Bahnhofsplatz (station square). In addition to improvements in climate control, the obsolete ventilation systems were replaced and the computer center was equipped with a cogeneration plant (heat and power). The incorporation of favorable storage technologies for heat and cold is the most important element of the concept designed to shift energy consumption from expensive peak load periods to less expensive base load periods. This maximizes the energy efficiency of the system. The results are impressive: The cogeneration plant reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 60 percent. In addition to the ecological benefits, the concept impresses with its economy. "Thanks to the concept, the client's annual energy costs will drop some 20 percent", said Dr.-Ing. Michael Schwarz, the engineer responsible for Green Building at DS-Plan. The concept is exemplary and - because of its innovative ideas - offers solutions for future energy systems in other buildings. As a supporter, DS-Plan now offers other clients the opportunity to become Green Building partners. Green Building is the European Commission's program to improve energy efficiency and to promote the use of renewable energy in non-residential buildings.
