B.Braun Melsungen AG - cross-border project management for expanding and creating new locations

05.10.2009

When setting up its global locations, this pharmaceutical company benefits among other things from economical processes and standards developed centrally in Germany and then reliably implemented in the various target countries. Therefore, the intention of having such locations as those in Spain, Peru, Argentina, Vietnam and Indonesia is to strengthen B.Braun Melsungen AG's international presence. This is quite a substantial competitive advantage for a pharmaceutical company when it can bring its production locations online quickly: each month a company is earlier to market, the greater the increase in sales. "Drees & Sommer had already proved to be a reliable partner when we were expanding our location here in Melsungen, Germany. Our well-established teams are now working together closely to expand our global presence," says Dr. Meinrad Lugan, member of the Board at B.Braun Melsungen AG, speaking of the many years of cooperation between the two partners.

Mastering the challenges facing the pharmaceutical industry
For project managers it is always a matter of executing each project within tight deadlines, pre-set costing limits and with the highest quality standards, just as those also stipulated in Germany, something particularly essential for production facilities built for the pharmaceutical industry. This means that our support for project managers has to start as soon as the search for the proper plot of land begins, for instance in Indonesia. The development of such highly specialised construction projects begins in Germany, and the projects are worked out just as if construction was being done for the German market. With many years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, the experts from Drees & Sommer focus primarily on networking construction and processing technology. When it then comes to calculating total investment costs, these are adapted to fit the prices usual in those other markets by implementing our own, in-house developed process that splits staff and material costs. This results in a precise overview of the actual costs involved in each construction project.

Monitoring projects worldwide from Germany
To implement such projects economically, local planning and construction direction is then used in the various target countries. Controlling is done centrally from Germany, supported by digital information that is delivered regularly to the project managers by those responsible on site. In addition, telephone conferences take place every 14 days between the project managers and each B.Braun project site so that the client in Germany can in turn be properly informed by Drees & Sommer of the current status of his project. This is done for all projects supervised from Germany, reducing interfaces and allowing projects to be executed much more efficiently and economically.
