Refurbishment of the Schiller National Museum completed right on schedule for the 250th anniversary of Schiller's birth

06.11.2009

The Schiller National Museum in Marbach has been under renovation for nearly two years. The exhibition has been reopened in time for the celebrations surrounding the 250th anniversary of Schiller's birth. The Drees & Sommer project managers managed construction work, paying particular attention to adherence to schedule and budget.

The historical documents exhibited in the Schiller National Museum require very special conditions to ensure that they remain in good condition: A steady temperature of 18° C, relative humidity of 50 %, and lighting of 50 lux. Meeting the stringent climate control requirements of the permanent exhibition required a technically demanding internal upgrade of a gross floor area of 1,500 square meters of the museum. This has now been successfully completed. The Drees & Sommer construction experts were commissioned by the principal - the German Schiller Society - to undertake project control, prior to which they examined the prevailing conditions in a feasibility study. In addition to ensuring on-schedule completion, the experts' primary concern was remaining within the # 5.6 million budget.

The installation of a utilities duct under the museum presented a special challenge. In order to create an additional cellar level to house all the building services equipment the existing cellar walls had to be supported and granite pillars of the building - which is over 100 years old - had to be hold up using structural steelwork.
