Project control for the reconstruction of the Augustinian Monastery

05.11.2009

For nearly ten years, Drees & Sommer has been involved in work on the reconstruction of the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt. What began in 2000 with the remodeling and extension of the monastery to create a conference venue with accommodation is scheduled to reach its successful conclusion in June 2010 with the opening of the rebuilt library. The project managers are supporting the curator of the Augustinian Monastery and the Evangelical Church of Central Germany by ensuring that the extensive work is completed on budget and on schedule.

The Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt was partially destroyed during an air raid on February 25, 1945. While the church, monastery and Renaissance courtyard were rebuilt shortly after the war, the historic library and forest lodges continued to lie in ruins. From 2000 to 2003, the monastery was developed into modern conference venue with accommodation. The Evangelical Church of Central Germany commissioned Drees & Sommer to manage the rehabilitation project.

To restore the heritage site in its entirety, reconstruction of the historic library and the forest lodges was also planned. Building work on the forest lodges began in July 2007, and they were opened in September 2008. The foundation stone for the library was laid in February 2008 on the foundations of the original building. Construction - which was delayed by the insolvency of the building company in January 2009 - is expected to be completed in July 2010, allowing the former library building to be used once more. In addition to project control, Drees & Sommer undertook contract and cost management, and was involved in securing ongoing construction finance and requisitioning of subsidies, to which end the experts participated in talks with state and city subsidy providers. They also developed financing and fund allocation plans, prepared fund requisitions, and coordinated with subsidy providers.
