The Facade Congress 2009 will be held at the Düsseldorf Hilton on November 24 and 25, 2009. The central theme of this year's congress - which is organized by the VDI (Association of German Engineers) Knowledge Forum - is buildings and housing of the future. The congress facilitator is Martin Lutz, Managing Director of Drees & Sommer Advanced Building Technologies GmbH. Martin Lutz has been involved in facade technology and general technical planning since 1993. His numerous reference projects include demanding facade projects, such as the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, the Lufthansa administration building in Frankfurt, the Post Office Tower in Bonn, and Dockland in Hamburg. In 2007, Martin Lutz took over facilitation of the Facade Congress. As an architect, he has given the event a holistic approach and integrated not only structural engineers and architects, but also industry representatives and facade contractors. As a result, the congress reflects all aspects relevant to innovative facades, which has allowed it to evolve into an interdisciplinary platform for sustainable concepts.
Architecture and facades have already been greatly influenced by the Energy Conservation Regulation (EnEV) 2009 - and the impact of the Energy Conservation Regulation EnEV 2012 can already be foreseen. This year's Facade Congress focuses on how facades of the future can meet these new requirements. Exceptional architecture will be presented in this context - such as the former winding tower of the Nordstern coal mine which has been put to a very different use, and the New Mosque in Algiers.
There will also be great emphasis on Green Building and on buildings with zero CO2 emissions. On November 25, Peter Mösle - Senior Project Partner with Drees & Sommer Advanced Building Technologies GmbH - will present a paper examining to what extent the DGNB German Sustainable Building Certificate will be able to assert itself on the international market.
The new Spiegel headquarters, a Green Building in Hamburg's HafenCity, will be presented as an outstanding project. Robert Vogel GmbH & So. KG - the principal - will report on their experiences with the planners during certification of the building, which was awarded four HafenCity Gold Medals.
Other areas covered at Facade Congress 2009 include "Product Development - Energy Conservation and Use of Natural Resources", "Experts in Facade Construction" and "Facade Construction Practice - Expert Information". In this way, the congress covers the topic of the building envelope entirely - from the architectural design to the completed building.
