On 29 January 2010, Austria House, as the first building of the Austrian Association for Sustainable Property Management (ÖGNI) was awarded a pre-certificate from the DGNB, the German Sustainable Building Council. The building in Vancouver, Canada, is home to the ORF studio for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, which are taking place from 12 to 28 February in Vancouver. In collaboration with the Universität für Bodenkultur Wien (BOKU, the University of Agricultural Sciences, Vienna), Drees & Sommer has been part of the certification process and has won a silver DGNB certification for the builders, the Austrian Passive House Group (APG).
The Austria House is the only national pavilion in these Winter Games and the most energy-efficient building ever built for the Olympics. Compared with air-conditioning units currently used, savings in Austria House come in at around 4,000 kWh per year. TheTreberspurg & Partner Architects designhas a floor space of 250 square metres across two levels. Builtin solid wood, the building has especially good thermal insulation. It is airtight, windproof and free of thermal bridges, and has triple glazing as well as heat recovery. The house also faces south and uses geothermal energy for heating and hot water. Austria House received a silver DGNB pre-certificate. Final certification of the completed building is planned for the weeks after the big sporting event.
The Austrian Society for Sustainable Property Management (ÖGNI)
The ÖGNI is a partner organisation of the German Society for Sustainable Construction and offers in Austria a customised certification system that makes it possible to compare the degree of sustainability of buildings. The seal of approval takes into account not only environmental criteria but also life-cycle costs, socio-cultural characteristics and the quality of the planning and execution - in short, all aspects.
