Official opening of the Leibniz Data Center's new building

24.07.2006

The Leibniz Data Center's new building in Garching was officially opened in and the SGI Altix 4700 (HLRB II) Federal Supercomputer was officially taken into operation.

Since spring 2004, Drees & Sommer Munich has been responsible for representing the Owner and for schedule planning. Design for the three buildings (computer building, institute, and lecture theater) is by Herzog + Partner, who were also responsible for execution planning. DS-Plan was the consultant for acoustics and thermal insulation. Overall technical and business management for the project was the responsibility of the Munich 2 State Construction Office.

As a result of Drees & Sommer's involvement, the new building was handed over in phases on schedule between December 2005 and March 2006. This allowed the complex new building to be completed on schedule within only two and a half years. Costing some EUR 42 million, the Leibniz Data Center has an area of 13,608 mē - plenty of space for the new EUR 38 million supercomputer. It is one of the most powerful computers in the world and will be used for scientific and materials research simulations.

As a result of the successful cooperation with the Munich 2 State Construction Office, Drees & Sommer has received a follow-up contract to represent the Owner and undertake schedule planning for construction of the new building for the Munich Academy of Television & Film and the Museum of Egyptian Art.
