Commissioned by project company Agora in 2005, Drees & Sommer Luxembourg is undertaking project control for transport infrastructure and development of the 120-hectare disused industrial site at Belval-Ouest. Since early 2006, the expert team for transport and infrastructure has been controlling the construction of two tunnels and several roads for the Luxembourg Department of Bridges & Roads (Administration des Ponts & Chaussées). The aim is to gradually extend the freeway network to France in the south of the country and to link Belval-Quest to the public road network. This requires measures such as the upgrade of Route N31 and the construction of a freeway tunnel through Belval. The major element of the first phase is the shell of the 735-meter tunnel linking Micheville. Other measures include construction of a 120-meter tunnel under railway lines and a northern access road to be built through a contaminated site. The motorway tunnel to France is scheduled to be opened at the end of 2009, allowing cross-border traffic to bypass Esch-sur-Alzette and Sanem.
