The new building for this project - currently the largest Public Private Partnership project in the health-care sector - has been started on the grounds of the Essen University Clinic
In mid November, Professor Andreas Pinkwart - Minister for Innovation, Science, Research and Technology for the State of North-Rhine Westphalia - undertook the symbolic groundbreaking in the presence of numerous project participants. During the initial phase, Drees & Sommer Frankfurt - with other expert teams, including DS-Plan - were responsible for technical building services and facility management, for parts of the invitation to tender, and for conducting the investor selection process. They are currently managing planning and execution services for the #140 million project as part of tenant management.
The investor, STRIBA Protonentherapiezentrum Essen GmbH - a Strabag und IBA property development company - is responsible for planning and construction as well as for technical equipment. STRIBA is leasing the property to the Essen University Clinic for 15 years, during which time it will undertake maintenance of the building and medical equipment, as well as providing cleaning, waste disposal and janitorial services. Medical operations will be run by WPE GmbH, a university clinic company. Title of the property will then transfer to the Essen University Clinic. From 2009, some 2000 patients per year will be treated with proton therapy, a technology which until now has only been used in research.
