Museum of Modern Literature wins RIBA European Award

25.06.2007

On June 22, 2007, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) awarded the RIBA European Architecture Award to the LiMo (Museum of Modern Literature ) designed by David Chipperfield.

Guests at the award ceremony included Kerstin Streule, Drees & Sommer project manager and representing the building owner Dr. Roland Kamzelak, Head of the Schiller National Museum Directorate and project manager for the new building. "I am really excited by the award and pleased that Drees & Sommer was able to help with implementation of the design."

The building is like a temple with its clear lines. The building impresses with esthetic appeal that has been systematically tested for functionality and with the successful blend of building and landscape. Literature displays such as the one in Marbach place particularly high demands on the building, as sensitive exhibits have to be optimally conserved. Conditions include, for example a constant temperature of 18° C and relative humidity of 50%.  In order to ensure that these extraordinary requirements were met - while adhering to a budget of EUR 11.8 million and the schedule - the building owner, the Deutsche Schillergesellschaft e.V. (German Schiller Society) commissioned Drees & Sommer with project control. The project involved a daily balancing act between cost optimization and architectural aspiration. Savings were necessary and were achieved right through to the opening without impacting the attractiveness of the design," said Streule at the award ceremony in the London Hilton. The Museum of Modern Literature has also been nominated for Briain's most prestigious architectural award - the Sterling Prize - the award ceremony for which takes place in September.
