Drees & Sommer is providing comprehensive project management for the construction of the new FAIR accelerator complex.

The Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) (Institute for Heavy Ion Research) in Darmstadt is building the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) accelerator complex and linking it to the existing GSI accelerator. The facility will give physicists new insights into the structure of matter and the evolution of the universe.

The heart of the new facility will be a huge dual-ring accelerator with a circumference of 1,100 meters located 15 meters below ground. FAIR will be one of the largest accelerators in the world. Many hundreds of researchers were involved in planning and review during years of preparation. The facility will be financed and operated as an international cooperative venture by an anticipated 14 countries. Over 2,000 scientists will be employed there. The new facility is scheduled for completion in 2015.
