Innovation prize for layer ventilation system at the Trade Fair Centre

10.08.2007

The layer ventilation system at the new Trade Fair Centre has been awarded the Innovation Prize by the US-based 'Trade Show Executive' magazine.

The layer ventilation system - which is unique in trade fair construction - was developed by DS-Plan, the Drees & Sommer Expert Team for energy management. In trials, the energy managers demonstrated that ventilation of the exhibition halls only required the lowest level to be supplied with fresh air. This resulted in a 30% reduction in the enclosed volume requiring ventilation. Fresh air is directed into the halls at low speed and only at heights of up to four meters. The air flow is barely perceptible. Used warm air rises and is extracted under the roof. On cold days, a heat recovery system recovers heat to warm fresh intake air. In conjunction with other measures, this so-called layer ventilation system led to a reduction of some EUR 15 million in construction costs, as well as annual operating cost savings of some EUR 450,000 for Stuttgarter Messe- und Kongress GmbH.

Drees & Sommer's role in this EUR 806 million project was to enable on-schedule completion and to ensure the highest possible level of quality while staying within the EUR 806 million budget. Project management for external and internal transport infrastructure was undertaken by the Drees & Sommer Infra Consult and Development Management Expert Team. The opening exhibition 'Innovation trifft Emotion' (Innovation meets emotion) will mark the start of a new era for the Stuttgart Trade Fair.
