The project encompasses more than 40 individual projects. Ongoing parallel to this are efforts to redevelop an area of land for alternative use, and a restoration of the city.
The project was awarded to Drees & Sommer Infra Consult and Entwicklungsmanagement on the strength of its long-standing experience in multi-project management and in redevelopment of land formerly used by the military. As part of a working group with the landscape architecture firm of Herbstreit Landschaftsarchitekten, Drees & Sommer is providing oversight of these measures, so that all objects can be completed, within budget and on time, by April 2010.
With these projects for the Regional Garden Festival, the grounds of the former Blücher Barracks are to be adaptively re-integrated into the urban landscape as part of the City's open-spaces and recreational system. The objective of dovetailing development of open spaces in the countryside alongside urban development projects is to improve the residential quality of life for the residents of Hemer following the withdrawal of the German armed forces.
The complex holdings of the military adaptive-reuse area on high-profile terrain abutting the 'Felsenmeer' nature reserve makes the project control mission particularly demanding.
