Groundbreaking ceremony for New Stuttgart Library

10.11.2008

Work on construction of the Stuttgart Library began on November 8, 2008 with the groundbreaking ceremony.

Drees & Sommer has been commissioned to undertake project control of the EUR 75 million project in the heart of Stuttgart, and is also be responsible for facility planning during planning. The principal - the City of Stuttgart - wishes to open the library in mid 2011. The new building is to become a center of lifelong learning. Architect Eun Young Yi has designed a futuristic building for the state capital, its clear lines fitting into the Stuttgart 21 concept. A special challenge for all involved in the project is the build-over of the planned light rail track directly under the building. Over 500,000 media units are to be accommodated in the library. There will also be 400 reading and work places as well as nine experiment and group rooms, and a moonshine kiosk for night owls. The previously separate music library will also be integrated into the new building.

Thanks to photovoltaic cells and geothermal systems, the Stuttgart Library will have outstanding energy efficiency, exceeding Energy Conservation Ordinance (EnEV) requirements by over 40 percent.
