Enveloping the Stuttgart TV tower

15.06.2005

After nearly 50 years, renovating the façade of the Stuttgart TV tower - which, by now, is under the protection of the preservation of monuments - is deemed essential due to technical reasons.
With the enveloping of the tower top in a height of 150 metres reconstruction works were initiated on Monday, 13 June 2005. Drees & Sommer Stuttgart has been contracted with project management of the 3 million Euro redevelopment measure and warrants smooth project procedure to the contractor, Südwestrundfunk. Planning the façade redevelopment required extraordinary solutions, which were developed by DS-Plan by means of a feasibility study and a subsequent full-size detailed plan. A special 50-ton scaffolding was lifted with a chain-block construction and anchored on a steel girder annulus mounted on the visitor platform. In order to ensure the scaffolding resisting wind and weather and the protected TV tower withstanding additional strain, the institute Industriedynamik (I.F.I.) Aachen, a subsidiary of DS-Plan, effected extensive aerodynamic model tests.
Redevelopment measures are scheduled to be concluded as early as late December 2005.
