New Karstadt department store in Leipzig

The laying of the foundation stone for the new Karstadt department store in April 2005 was the start of one of the most ambitious construction projects yet in Leipzig's city centre.

For the constructor, Karstadt Immobilien AG & Co, Essen, Drees & Sommer manages the planning process in terms of project development and assumes quality assurance of the building construction acting as stakeholder of the subsequent leaser. DS-Plan has been contracted for building physics and exterior technique. Special underground engineering of the 67 million Euro project poses a specific challenge and is necessary to secure the facades of the protected building and neighbouring houses as well as the citytunnel passing under the property. The department store with a total of ca. of 35.000 sqare metres sales floor - presently Leipzig's largest construction - will be re-opened in October 2006.
