Stuttgart's new building of the Museum of Art is opened

03.03.2005

On 3rd March 2005, numerous invited guests from regional politics and industry celebrated the opening of the museum's new building.
On ca. 5.000 square metres of exhibition space, art lovers will in future be able to appreciate permanent as well as alternating exhibitions. In view of various spatial and thematic settings, the architecture has been diversified, while the glass façade and glass roof bestow an inviting openness upon the cube.
Tried and tested management methods as well as the experience of Drees & Sommer project managers ensured the work being concluded according to the aims of the developer, the city of Stuttgart. In terms of target dates and cost management, Drees & Sommer project managers were confronted with many challenges arising from the project's central inner city location, the existing tunnel structure and the building's high technical standard.

Traffic related challenges could hardly have been any more complex: during constant use with ca. 30.000 vehicles a day, the development of the federal road B 27 "Planie" and its tunnel structure had to be coordinated in accordance with the overall project. In later stages of construction, the project management team had to harmonise a multitude of technical extension works. Climatic requirements of the building - necessary to house the works of art of the city Stuttgart in a secure and protected environment - strongly shaped the work of the project managers. With their comprehensive coordination of target dates the team ensured scheduled completion of the façade, for instance the glass cube, but also the assembly of the luminous ceiling in the exhibition rooms or the light art in the foyer.
