On July 28, 2009, with Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Monika Stolz in attendance, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to kick off construction of the new Schwarzwald-Baar Clinic in Villingen-Schwenningen.
Measuring approx. 105,000 square meters in gross floor space, the new facility will accommodate around 750 beds, including 36 in the clinic's tastefully appointed Comfort Ward. The beds will be distributed throughout 22 intermediate-care wards, two intensive-care wards and a short-term care ward. The hospital will also house a Surgical Center, offering 15 operating rooms on a single level. Designed with operational workflows in mind, the facility offers new architectural features and approaches to the use of space that will generate considerable savings in operating costs.
Total costs for the project, including land and financing, are EUR 263 million. With overall construction time estimated at approx. 3.5 years, the new clinic will be ready to go into operation in late 2012.
Last summer, after the call for tenders by a general contractor had failed to produce economical results, at the recommendation of Drees & Sommer, over the past several months the entire project was rescheduled in terms of the placement of orders with the individual building trades. This way, some 70 percent of the planned construction contracts were awarded within budget before construction work began. This ensures that the project will be executed economically.
