New prison in Burgdorf to be completed by 2012.
The next milestone in the first Swiss Public Private Partnership (PPP) project was reached with the laying of the foundation stone at the end of May 2010.
The decision to apply the PPP process to the construction of the new prison in Burgdorf was reached at the end of the year with the Canton of Bern awarding the contract to the bidding consortium. Drees & Sommer supported the consortium of Marti/BAM/Hälg in the preparatory phase by providing technical due diligence services, and contributed to securing financing for the project from a bank consortium of eight cantonal banks under the leadership of UBS.
Drees & Sommer will undertake controlling during construction, which is scheduled to be completed in March 2012. The PPP contract has a term of 25 years and operations will be monitored for the entire period through to 2037.
In addition to the new regional prison accommodating 110 inmates, a road inspectorate with its associated depot and an administrative center are to be built on the 30,000 sqm former armory site in Burgdorf.
