Upgrade of the Rhine flood barrier XXX (Roman "30") in the Karlsruhe administrative district started with a groundbreaking ceremony on May 11, 2011.
The part of the Rhine flood barrier to be upgraded protects the towns of Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, Linkenheim-Hochstetten and Dettenheim. Extensive measures will both improve the stability of the dam and increase its freeboard height, that is, the distance between flood water level and the top of the dam.
The design and profile of the flood barrier stems from the 1970s, and the work will also improve access to the dam during floods. The 16.5 km section to be upgraded protects 30 square kilometers of land.
Drees & Sommer was commissioned by the Karlsruhe Regional Council to undertake project control and land purchase management for the construction project.
