Urban design framework for Kaarster Kreuz (Kaarst interchange)

27.06.2011

Drees & Sommer developed a potential analysis and an urban design framework for the development of the Kaarster Kreuz industrial estate.

The 170-hectare area next to the Kaarst autobahn interchange in North Rhine-Westfalia is to be restructured following the relocation of the IKEA furniture store. Drees & Sommer was commissioned by the City of Kaarst to assess development of the so-called Kaarster Kreuz industrial estate. Great emphasis was placed on taking a holistic view: In addition to taking market, site and urban development as well as user & investor requirements into account, dependencies between existing areas and sites to be rezoned were also considered.

Politicians, administrators and other experts were involved early in the process, during the development of the urban design framework. The project will be accompanied by intensive public consultation.

The findings were presented to the relevant political bodies on June 9, 2011. These findings form the basis for informing the public for community meetings and for the subsequent implementation of the various measures.
