Stuttgart Library opens on schedule

28.10.2011

The Stuttgart City Library has some 500,000 books, films, sound recordings, newspapers, music scores, artworks and digital media.

After three years under construction, the City Library on Mailänder Platz in Stuttgart opened its doors on October 24, 2011.
Drees & Sommer was commissioned to undertake project control for the architecturally unique building designed by architect Eun Young Yi. The building has an impressive open-plan concept with a reading gallery extending over five floors and a central core.

And in keeping with the principle of sustainable urban development, the building meets all requirements of a modern Green Building. Thanks to photovoltaic cells and geothermal plant, the library has excellent energy properties and surpasses the requirements of the Energy Conservation Ordinance (EnEV) by over 40 percent.

One of the project control tasks was to integrate construction work on the urban light rail tunnel into the overall project. The demanding project has now been completed on schedule and below the projected construction cost budget of EUR  79 million.
