The Stuttgart Library celebrated its topping-out ceremony on May 12, 2010, some 18 months after the start of construction.
The celebrations were attended by 500 invited guests, including the Lord Mayor of Stuttgart Dr. Wolfgang Schuster and State Secretary Dr. Dietrich Birk of the Ministry of Science, Research and Art (Baden-Württemberg).
The shell was completed in March 2010, allowing installation of the double facade to begin. The first elements of the secondary facade of reinforced concrete with glass inserts were installed in time for the topping-out ceremony.
Drees & Sommer is controlling costs, schedules and quality for the building, which was designed by architect Eun Young Yi. Construction over the planned light rail line, which passes directly under the building, is a key challenge.
The library is scheduled to be completed in summer 2011.
