The grand opening of the entire Rathaus Galerie mall in Hagen took place on November 13, 2014. The originally planned opening date around four weeks earlier was not approved by the city of Hagen due to fire prevention deficiencies. As a member of a commissioning task force established at short notice by the principal of the Grünwald-based GEDO Group, Drees & Sommer played a substantial role in ensuring that the Rathaus Galerie could be opened within a month.
The building on Friedrich Ebert Square offers some 50,000 square meters of space for over 70 retail and service industry businesses, as well as additional space for offices and services. A special feature of the mall is the 18-meter-high light-flooded ellipse in the middle of the building where the two column-free main malls meet. The underground car park has a capacity of 430 cars. By investing some 120 million euros in the Rathaus Galerie, the GEDO group has created a new shopping experience in the heart of the city. Drees & Sommer was tasked with providing project management and – following non-approval of the opening date in mid October – with membership of the commissioning task force for the new building.
