The entrance building of the new ZAL TechCenter looks like an oversized television set. On March 7, 2016, the Center for Applied Aviation Research officially opened its new building in Hamburg-Finkenwerder. Up to 600 researchers from companies, universities and institutes will work here. Drees & Sommer has supported the project from the beginning and provided project management and real estate consulting services to ZAL GmbH.

The new building was completed in December 2015 after a planning and construction period of seven years. Scientists are already conducting research into many areas including fuel cells, 3D printing, Industry 4.0, acoustics and virtual reality. The project with an investment volume of € 100 million has been realized jointly by the City of Hamburg, Airbus Operations GmbH, Lufthansa Technik AG, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), four universities, and twelve other partners.

The new Research Center consists of two large halls and a central building that resembles an oversized monitor. The latter contains the central entrance area with meeting rooms and a staff restaurant. The new building also has research and test infrastructure, as well as laboratories and offices. The new ZAL TechCenter has a total floor area of more than 26,000 square meters.

Drees & Sommer has been supporting the project since 2009 with services ranging from programming, investor invitation to tender, and investor controlling through to commissioning and tenant management. The new building was completed on schedule with the support of the Drees & Sommer experts, allowing the research facility to start operation as planned.
