Major projects in Germany are often behind schedule or overrun the budget – two landmark projects in North Rhine-Westphalia are impressive by running contrary to this generalization.
Drees & Sommer provided comprehensive project management services for both the new exhibition center of Essen (Neue Messe Essen) and the new building of the Regional Authority for Nature, the Environment and Consumer Protection (Landesamt für Natur, Umwelt und Verbraucherschutz – LANUV) in Duisburg. In doing so, the international project management and consulting company ensured exact compliance with the specified framework for costs, deadlines and quality. In the case of the Neue Messe Essen construction project, some of the building budget was even unused.
Project Management Ensures Success of Project during Ongoing Work
Following conversion, modernization and partial new construction, Neue Messe Essen is now one of the most technically advanced exhibition centers in Germany. The new areas greatly enhance the exhibition center for both exhibitors and visitors. The main feature of Neue Messe Essen is the clear structuring of the halls. A total of eight large halls have now been created from 18 halls, some of which were divided into small sections. This makes it easier for visitors to find their way around and simplifies logistics for exhibitors. It also offers entirely new options for installing exhibition booths. The areas are now more spacious, brighter and the layout is structured more clearly. Further conference and congress areas, a business club and a large new foyer with full glazing were also added. Modernization of the exhibition site also involved the energy supply and air conditioning.
Space for Offices and Research Rooms: Aurelis Develops New LANUV Building
At the beginning of 2019, around 400 LANUV employees moved into their new workplaces at the site. The building complex was designed by agn, based in Ibbenbüren. It is located nearby Duisburg’s central railroad station and offers around 16,500 square meters of rental space. There is a staff restaurant as well as a conference and event area in the ground floor of the office building, plus 80 laboratories in the laboratory building. Drees & Sommer has been advising Aurelis on the project since it began in 2012. Initially, Drees & Sommer demonstrated in a feasibility study that the space requirements for LANUV could be met on the Aurelis site. The international project management and consulting company supported the construction project with project management, commissioning management and general contractor controlling. Drees & Sommer experts were also instrumental in obtaining Gold award from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for the building.
The intensive cooperation in the various phases of the project was a crucial factor in the success of both projects. Drees & Sommer was advising the clients as early as the contract award procedure. The group also provided support with general contractor controlling during the execution phase, in order to keep an eye on the quality of work and to monitor and coordinate construction processes.
