The new C2C Lab, the world's first comprehensive building renovation based on Cradle to Cradle criteria, was opened on September 10, 2019. Drees & Sommer and RBS GROUP supervised the project, the first of its kind.
Educational center, NGO office and real-world laboratory: the C2C Lab in Berlin is not only the new office for the Cradle to Cradle association, but it will also be a meeting place for knowledge sharing and further training relating to Cradle to Cradle (C2C). The Cradle to Cradle design concept, promoted and put into practice by the association, represents potentially infinite circulation of materials and nutrients within cycles. In order to put this principle into practice in terms of content and practicality, healthy and recyclable products were used for the C2C Lab during the renovation of the building – from windows and partition walls to ceilings and paints through furniture and lighting. Drees & Sommer supervised the renovation project through planning management as well as Cradle to Cradle and process consulting. RBS GROUP - Part of Drees & Sommer was responsible for the C2C design planning and interior design.
The Cradle to Cradle concept has already been used in many new construction projects, but the new C2C Lab is regarded as the world's first renovation based on this principle. The best-practice example will serve as a real-world laboratory in which innovations are tested and put into practice. Workshops, seminars, events and guided tours in the C2C Lab are intended to contribute additionally to the promotion and widespread application of Cradle to Cradle principles.
