DS HUB: Every Place is a Temporary Place

Client

Drees & Sommer

Project duration

2018–2019

Location

Stuttgart, Germany

Innovative building technology, future-oriented workplaces and sustainable repurposing – these are some of the things for which the Innovation Hub in Stuttgart, or DS HUB for short, is setting new standards.

The preservation of the building’s character served as a starting point. The fact that the building was to be converted into an interim solution became an essential component of our concept. The idea was to ensure that the industrial look and the original purpose of the building remained both recognisable and perceptible. At the same time, a completely new story emerged with the insertion of a new layer.

Colour is a fundamental theme here, flowing through the building and providing warmth and a pleasant atmosphere, as a contrast to the raw surfaces and the visible ceiling pipes.

The concept places a lot of emphasis on communication and interdisciplinary exchange, while at the same time creating spaces where staff can concentrate on their work. In the spirit of sustainability, furniture and fabrics made from recycled materials were installed in, or developed for, many areas. Plants are used as a zoning element, which has a positive effect on the indoor climate.

The Innovation Hub recognises the users’ needs and adapts to them. This is facilitated by a series of technical innovations that are being piloted in the building.

The DS Innovation Hub has won three design awards: the Iconic Awards: Innovative Architecture 2019, the German Design Award 2020 in the “Excellent Architecture – Interior Architecture” category, and the iF Design Award 2020.
