Project duration

March 2015—December 2019

The demolition of an extension from the 1970s and two former cell wings in the inner courtyard created space for a new Y-shaped building measuring around 6,045 square meters. It houses the entrance to the building, including the security gate, the justice service center, and hearing rooms. The new building also connects two building wings on Rudolfsplatz and along Schanzlgasse.

The historic structure of the building has been preserved due to its listed status. To improve the energy balance, the client had the façades and roof renovated and the windows restored. The former cell wings were converted into modern office space. Inside, the building was completely remodeled with newly arranged rooms. State-of-the-art media technology was installed in the jury courtroom and multi-purpose hall following extensive restoration work. Five newly built detention cells ensure that detainees are kept safe during the trials.
