Comprehensive Renovation of the Swiss National Library in Bern

The Swiss National Library in Bern is undergoing a comprehensive renovation to preserve its historic fabric while preparing the building for future generations. The project's objective is to conserve the listed building and, at the same time, create modern, attractive spaces for visitors. The winning design, "NATBIB", by Christ & Gantenbein and Drees & Sommer combines a respectful approach to the historic building complex with the requirements of a contemporary library. By opening up and connecting key areas, the project creates inviting spaces for exhibitions, interaction and public use, strengthening the National Library as a vibrant place for knowledge exchange and community.

The project pursues ambitious sustainability goals. The requirements of the Swiss Sustainable Building Standard (SNBS), Minergie-ECO and the Confederation's Sustainability Guideline (GI) are consistently integrated into the planning process. Balancing heritage conservation, resource efficiency and the objectives of the Circular Construction Charter, the project places a strong emphasis on the careful reuse of existing materials and structures. The result is a holistic and sustainable solution that combines environmental, economic and social value while creating a healthy environment for employees and users.
