Drees & Sommer Luxembourg was commissioned, as part of a European tender, to oversee the development of the historic water reservoir as a new entrance platform to the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Völklinger Hütte – European Centre for Art and Industrial Culture’.

From the planning phase to execution and project completion, all stages were managed by Drees & Sommer to ensure that the project ran smoothly and on schedule.
The new entrance platform includes a reception area, a café and a shop, and serves as a link between the newly created area and the existing museum area located in the ‘Pumpenhaus’. A new footbridge connects the reception area, overlooking the railway line, to the water tower.

The Völklinger Hütte is the only fully preserved steelworks from the heyday of industrialisation in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. The ironworks was founded in the 19th century and remained in operation until the 1980s. Today, the site serves as a museum and exhibition space for contemporary art, as well as a venue for concerts and events. Visitors can explore the impressive production halls and machinery and gain a concrete impression of the daily working life of the ironworks' employees.
