The purpose of the new Semmering Base Tunnel is to shorten the route between Vienna and Graz. Starting in 2030, it will connect Gloggnitz in Lower Austria with Mürzzuschlag in Styria, relieving the Semmering Railway. In addition, freight transport on this route will become more attractive, as heavy trains will also be able to pass through the tunnel.
The Semmering Base Tunnel offers numerous advantages:
- Shorter travel times
- Improved connectivity for southern Austria
- Economic stimulus and job creation in the region
- Relief for the Semmering mountain route, leading to more efficient use of rail transport overall
The Semmering Base Tunnel is currently in an advanced stage of construction. Work is progressing from 14 construction sites, with around 500 meters remaining until completion. Tunnel excavation is already approximately 98% complete.
