At the site of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), a building was constructed that provides students with seminar and study rooms as well as a library across a usable area of 3,100 square meters.
What makes it special: it is a timber construction.
On October 12, 2020, a ceremonial handover of the keys for the "Ilse Wallentin House" took place in the presence of high-ranking representatives from politics and business. Due to COVID-19 regulations, the opening was streamed live.
Project type: Culture, Education
Location: Peter Jordan Street 82, 1190 Vienna
Functions: Seminar rooms, study spaces, and facilities for the Institute of Transportation at BOKU. The building also includes event-friendly common areas, serving as a meeting point and marketplace for students.
An additional timber building is being constructed on the BOKU campus to meet the growing demand for office and teaching space.
This building offers a usable area of approximately 3,000 m². In addition to a seminar center (approx. 1,100 m²), a library (approx. 600 m²), and institute offices (approx. 500 m²), it also includes pool and user rooms (approx. 600 m²).
Challenges addressed:
- Short construction time due to a tight schedule
- Strict cost constraints
- Reinforced concrete core combined with sustainable timber construction
- High energy efficiency
- Construction carried out alongside ongoing university operations
- Slope stabilization using shotcrete and soil nailing currently underway
- Continuous university operations in neighboring buildings (Wilhelm Exner House, Franz Schwackhöfer House, Center for International Relocation) must be maintained
- Planning based on an integrated Building Information Model (BIM)
