New Pediatric Clinic Opens at Traunstein Hospital

With the inauguration of the second construction phase, the comprehensive restructuring of Traunstein Hospital has reached an important milestone. Drees & Sommer has been supporting this major project since the initial strategic planning phase—most recently with a focus on the clinical commissioning of the new building.

On July 17, 2026, the new pediatric clinic building at Traunstein Hospital was officially opened with a ceremony. In addition to the pediatric clinic, the new building also provides a modern, future-oriented home for the surgical and medical intensive care units. With this, KlinikenSüdostbayern AG is sustainably strengthening medical care for children, adolescents, and patients requiring intensive care in the region. For the inauguration, the hospital network welcomed numerous guests, including Bavarian State Minister Michaela Kaniber. The Free State of Bavaria provided approximately 31.5 million euros in funding for the new building. 

The new building is part of the phased restructuring of Traunstein Hospital, the centerpiece of KlinikenSüdostbayern AG. The goal of the overall project is to consolidate functional areas in a logical manner, create new rooms and operating rooms, expand bed capacity, and simultaneously increase the hospital’s flexibility. The project is being implemented in three consecutive construction phases—while hospital operations continue as usual. 

Drees & Sommer has been supporting the overall project since the initial strategic planning phase in 2016. The scope of services ranges from operational and structural goal planning and the coordination of the space and functional program to project management for construction phases 1 through 3. In addition, Drees & Sommer provides support in the areas of operational organization and medical technology planning. 

Most recently, the focus has been on the clinical commissioning of the new building. Together with the project team, users were prepared for hospital operations, relocation and training measures were coordinated, and the medical and organizational processes were ensured to guarantee a smooth start. 

The next steps are already in place: Following the first construction phase and the now-opened second construction phase, the third construction phase will follow, featuring a new surgical center, delivery rooms, and new diagnostic facilities. 

With the new building, Traunstein Hospital is creating a modern “home for heroes big and small”—and another important building block for efficient, locally accessible healthcare in southeastern Bavaria.
