Every day, we strive to make a lasting impact. In 2020, we celebrate 50 years of Drees & Sommer with an award-winning film, called the blue way. Derived from our purpose, it tells the story of a young woman dreaming and shaping a future worth living. “Sometimes, you just put a sheet of paper in front of you and imagine all that is beautiful.”
The Story Behind Our Purpose
In the early 1970s, sustainability was not yet popular. We pioneered it anyway, naming our approach the blue way – because for us, blue is the color of sustainability.
Our Project Purpose: PlusEnergie and Cradle to Cradle®
In 1986, we developed a mathematical model to simulate a building’s energy consumption. In 1992, we developed the eco-management system for Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. Our system reduced energy consumption, carbon emissions, and resource usage. Twenty years later, the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) certified Potsdamer Platz as the first silver living quarter.
Our administration building achieved DGNB Gold for New Construction in 2009, a decade after its completion. In 2021, we opened our PlusEnergy building OWP 12. It generates more energy than it consumes, for example through geothermal energy, air heat, and photovoltaics.
We design recyclable products using Cradle to Cradle® principles. Our products can be easily dismantled and reused while maintaining the same quality. With this, we create buildings without waste – and were the first to establish Cradle to Cradle® principles in construction.
For example, our exhibition booth at the EXPO REAL trade fair aligned with Cradle to Cradle® and produced no waste.
