The existing Karlsruhe exhibition halls were too small, hence a decision to build a New Messe was made in 1999. A self-supporting timber structure with a width of approximately 70 metres spanned the four exhibition halls. The loads resulting from the timber structures were transferred by way of massive reinforced steel supports, each of which was reinforced with up to 750 kg per m³ of concrete.
