In recent years, Hamburg's largest excavation pit was created in HafenCity. Due to the significant amount of earthwork and specialized civil engineering required, constructing this excavation pit was extremely challenging.

The U4 subway construction crosses the excavation pit, which required sophisticated back anchoring between existing anchors in the adjacent embankment walls, for example. Due to its proximity to the Elbe River, the deep excavation pit requires flood protection.

The ground conditions are among the most difficult in the Hamburg area due to the proximity of groundwater to the surface, soft layers, and numerous obstacles and existing structures.

The Overseas district will feature shops, restaurants, entertainment venues, numerous apartments, hotel rooms, and workplaces.
