Grün Berlin GmbH, a company owned by the federal state of Berlin, implements projects of national importance with an outstanding cultural, historical and urban development quality in the German capital. The company has now implemented over 100 projects including the redesign of the Cultural Forum (Kulturforum) near Potsdamer Platz and the Berlin Wall Memorial Site (Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer). Current projects include the Mauerpark on a site which was part of the Berlin Wall, the Spreepark culture and recreation park and the tourist information system for the whole of Berlin. In addition, Grün Berlin operates and develops 600 hectares of urban park land such as Tempelhof Field, Gleisdreieck Park and the Gardens of the World where Berlin's International Garden Exhibition was held in 2017.

From 2013 to 2016 construction work was carried out in four phases to supplement the overall complex and prepare for the IGA Berlin 2017. The total investment was approx. € 26 million. The building phases were as follows: phase 1: English garden; phase 2: visitor center; phase 3: north/south meadows; phase 4: new gardens (water gardens). The construction work included the development of landscape settings, technical infrastructures, engineering structures and buildings. The IGA Berlin 2017 was held in the Gardens of the World. To prepare the site for the exhibition, temporary work with a total volume of approx. € 14 million was planned. The implementation of this work was tied to the completion date of the previous permanent work within the Gardens of the World and scheduled to be carried out between 2015 and 2017. The work included buildings and minor architectural settings, enclosures, gates, turnstiles, the visitor guidance system, temporary supply and disposal pipes and cables, outdoor exhibit facilities, exhibits in buildings, care of the exhibits, environmental education, artwork, temporary traffic infrastructure, parking spaces.
