DomRömer GmbH, Frankfurt
Frankfurt, Germany
February 2012 – March 2019
approx. € 200m
Frankfurt’s new old town has been built between Dom, Römer, and Paulskirche. The mixture of reconstructions and new buildings blends seamlessly into the historical image and gives a new lease on life to the neighborhood destroyed during the Second World War. Drees & Sommer supported the ambitious construction project with schedule, cost, and buyer management.
It ultimately consisted of 35 buildings—15 reconstructions based on the originals and 20 new buildings—within the historical boundaries from 1944. The remaining historical façade elements, known as spolia, were used in the façades to create a particularly authentic look. The neighborhood uniquely combines the past and present, creating living space and enticing people to linger in museums, cafés, restaurants, and stores. In March 2019, the DomRömer Quarter won the coveted MIPIM Award for the Best Urban Regeneration Project.
The DomRömer Quarter is one of our Wall of Fame projects. These are projects that we are particularly proud of. They have not only helped our respective clients, but also us as a company.
Why the DomRömer Quarter deserves a place on our Wall of Fame:
- Faithful reconstruction: This historical neighborhood of the largest medieval old town in Germany was destroyed in the Second World War. Drees & Sommer supported the faithful restoration
- Cityscape preserved and beautified: It was a major challenge to combine the appearance of the new buildings and the reconstructions
