The Rheinstraße overpass in Darmstadt, which spans the Deutsche Bahn (DB) railway tracks, is located directly in front of the main railway station. Crossing a total of eight tracks, it serves as a key access route from the A5 and A67 motorways into Darmstadt’s city centre. The bridge accommodates motorised traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, and public buses. A double-track tram line also runs across the structure.

Due to structural concerns, the existing bridge will be replaced with a new one. Preliminary work began in 2021 and was completed by 2023. Planning and construction preparations for the new structure will commence in 2025, allowing for the demolition of the current bridge and the construction of the new one by 2027. Completion is scheduled for late 2029.

Various utility and service lines will need to be relocated, some on a provisional basis. DB systems will be adapted in accordance with EBO (Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsordnung) approval processes. The tram line will be approved in accordance with BOStrab (Ordinance on the Construction and Operation of Tramways).
