Rheinstraße Bridge, Darmstadt
Drees & Sommer is a reliable partner for clients throughout every stage of a project
The Rheinstraße overpass in Darmstadt, which spans the Deutsche Bahn (DB) railway tracks, is located directly in front of the main railway station. Crossing a total of eight tracks, it serves as a key access route from the A5 and A67 motorways into Darmstadt’s city centre. The bridge accommodates motorised traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, and public buses. A double-track tram line also runs across the structure.
Continuous support
Due to structural concerns, the existing bridge is scheduled for replacement. Drees & Sommer is supporting the project as the project manager and is also responsible for managing subsidies. Preliminary measures commenced in 2021 and were completed by 2023. Planning and construction preparation for the replacement structure will begin in 2025, paving the way for the demolition of the existing bridge and the construction of the new one by 2027. Project completion is expected by late 2029.
Various utility and service lines will need to be relocated, some on a provisional basis. DB systems will be adapted in accordance with EBO (Eisenbahn-Bau- und Betriebsordnung) approval processes. The tram line will be approved in accordance with BOStrab (Ordinance on the Construction and Operation of Tramways).
