Advancing urban transformation throughout Europe

Integrative, sustainable neighborhoods – our expertise for your projects in the NEB Lab

Climate change, the biodiversity crisis – as well as fragile supply chains, the skills shortage and demographic developments – all represent huge challenges for the economy and for society. There are many good ideas and specific projects aimed at achieving the transformation to a sustainable and livable future. Nonetheless, projects often face huge hurdles, particularly in the initial stages. This is especially true when it comes to projects aimed at initiating change in urban environments and pursuing inclusive and participatory approaches in addition to environmental sustainability.

Our solution:

Europe has enormous potential when it comes to competing globally! The Continent has long since proven that its innovations can initiate new global trends and developments in business, culture, architecture and real estate. One example is the revolutionary Bauhaus movement that started in the 1920s.

The New European Bauhaus (NEB) builds on this legacy. Launched as part of the EU’s Green New Deal, it is aimed not only at the general public, but also at architects, urban planners and +++construction and engineering companies as well as educational institutions, scientists and engineers. The purpose of the initiative is to seek out innovative and sustainable projects that will progress transformation in the economy and society.

As part of the initiative, we – that is Drees & Sommer, the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB), CPEA, BABLE and ICLEI – build on our cooperation with you to raise the profile of your project throughout Europe.

But that’s not all: We work closely with you to provide you with comprehensive technical advice and establish a tightly integrated network for your benefit. In this way, we prepare the ecosystem you need to make your project a success. We will do this for you no matter how big or small your project – whether you are involved in large-scale construction, development and infrastructure projects – for example in the areas of the circular economy or carbon neutrality – or striving to achieve small-scale ecological and social improvements at a local level.

What is the New European Bauhaus Laboratory (NEB Lab)?

Founded in Weimar in 1919, the Bauhaus movement strove to achieve renewal in all spheres of life through functional and esthetic design and construction.

Today’s New European Bauhaus (NEB), an initiative of the European Commission, builds on this legacy. Launched in 2021 by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, its goal is to combine the principles of the historic Bauhaus movement with those of the European Green Deal to create sustainable, esthetic and inclusive living environments. The initiative seeks to bring about positive change in European society by combining art, culture, science and technology.

The NEB Lab provides a co-creation space that you can use to advance your projects and network with stakeholders.

The association’s goal is to promote sustainability in the construction and real estate industry, and to firmly embed awareness of it in the general public. The certification system developed by DGNB, an independent non-profit organization, is a planning and optimization tool for assessing sustainable buildings and neighborhoods. Its use helps to increase genuine sustainability in construction projects. The DGNB system is based on a holistic understanding of sustainability that takes the environment, people and cost efficiency into account in equal measure. In addition, more than 10,000 people in more than 60 countries have already been trained as experts in sustainable construction by the DGNB Academy platform.

ICLEI has a team of over 170 professionals working to drive positive environmental, economic and social change. Every year, we are involved in more than 120 projects, collaborating with cities and regions on key topics such as circular economy, climate neutrality, resilience, culture, housing, and sustainable mobility. We are active at the EU policy level, advocating for ambitious sustainability goals and bringing stakeholders together through impactful events. As part of its global network, ICLEI promotes peer learning, partnerships and innovative solutions to urban challenges. ICLEI Europe provides a link between local authorities and the private sector, making sustainability a central element of urban development.

The Climate Positive Europe Alliance (CPEA) is an independent think and do tank based in Brussels that focuses on promoting sustainable practices in the built environment. Taking a pan-European approach, CPEA bridges the gap between policy-makers and practice, and aims to create built environments that strike a balance between environmental responsibility, economic viability and people’s well-being. CPEA is committed to accelerating the transition to a zero-carbon built environment and aligns its endeavors with the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Going beyond current sectoral practices, CPEA seeks to raise the bar, aspiring to exceed net-zero emissions targets. Drawing on an extensive network of technical experts across Europe, CPEA advises EU decision makers and helps it members implement EU policies. In addition, CPEA collaborates with leading sectoral initiatives and conducts joint research on key sustainability issues that impact the built environment.
