Smart Charging

The future of e-mobility lies in smart charging and the sustainable expansion of the charging infrastructure. Drees & Sommer views smart charging, the expansion of charging infrastructure (charging stations and wallboxes), smart grids, and digitalization as a unified package. Our experts aim to develop a holistic approach to sustainable mobility.

In recent years, electric vehicles have been playing an increasingly important role thanks to the rising demand for sustainable mobility. But one of the biggest challenges faced by EV users is finding a convenient and efficient way to charge their vehicle. A well-developed charging infrastructure and the use of intelligent charging systems are key requirements for greater uptake of EVs. These systems therefore represent an important step towards climate protection and environmental compatibility.

Expansion of the charging infrastructure

The expansion of the charging infrastructure requires not only huge investment, but also careful planning and close coordination between the various stakeholders. To address this, Drees & Sommer has developed a holistic solution that enables the smooth planning and implementation of smart charging infrastructure expansion.

In this context, being smart also means determining when DC fast charging – including high-power charging (HPC) – is actually necessary or appropriate, and when simple charging with alternating current (AC) is sufficient. We recommend the right charging system for your individual applications and users.

How we can support you

  • Analysis and assessment of the property (service capacity)
  • Assessment of requirements (number of charging stations, type, output, etc.)
  • Technical, economical, future-oriented, standardized and unbiased implementation
  • Location and type of charging infrastructure
  • Public and publicly accessible charging infrastructure
  • Invitations to tender/concessions

(e.g. OEMs i.e. vehicle manufacturers, Charge Point Operators (CPOs) i.e. charging network operators)

  • Planning and, where appropriate, operating
  • Finding premises, planning and realizing projects
  • Approval management, network connection, etc.

We are already developing solutions for charging battery-electric commercial vehicles. We design charging facilities for e-trucks at logistics centers as well as charging hubs for e-trucks featuring the new Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard. Drees & Sommer’s holistic consulting approach takes all EU Taxonomy requirements and ESG criteria into account. Our team of experts provides support across all service phases to achieve emission-free electromobility operations.

Smart Charging

The advantages of Smart Charging are clear:

More efficient charging: Smart Charging optimizes the charging process through intelligent load management and digitalization, with features such as reservation options – which saves time and energy, and optimizes utilization.

Sustainability: Smart charging maximizes the use of renewable energy sources while minimizing the use of non-renewable sources. The goal is to use as much self-generated energy as possible, when this is available. This requires intelligent control of the charging process.

Reduced load on the power grid: Smart Charging reduces the load on the power grid during peak hours by scheduling and controlling charging sessions during off-peak hours without sacrificing convenience.

Automation: Smart Charging automatically schedules charging sessions to ensure that the vehicle is always ready.

Cost saving: Smart charging optimizes energy consumption, thus reducing the cost of charging electric vehicles.
