Aachen Mobility Competence Center

The Mobility Competence Center brings together high-performance laboratories in an urban setting, combining nature and technology with functionality and dynamic form. Designed by the renowned architectural firm studioMDA (NYC), the KMAC offers 4,000 square metres of new space for research and teaching. With laboratories from three departments located next to each other and several new lecture halls and a cafeteria, the new building provides the necessary space for learning. The cafeteria can also be used as a study area.

The building's dynamic shape is the result of a series of wind studies. It optimises wind flow and natural ventilation in Aachen city centre. The 'Standby Efficiency Shading Concept', an automated shading system, reacts to the sun's position and adjusts heating or cooling accordingly. This keeps the rooms at an optimal temperature throughout the day.
