Modernization and renovation of the Museum of Hamburg History
Drees & Sommer takes over project management for the revitalization and redesign of the permanent exhibition
Majestic halls and an idyllic courtyard. A unique model railway. With its reformist architecture and moving history, the Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte (MHG) is undergoing a redesign. Founded in 1908, the museum is set to reopen in 2028. Not only is it one of Hamburg's most architecturally significant buildings, it is also one of the three largest museums in the Free Hanseatic City.
Its numerous paintings, sculptures, textiles, everyday objects, photographs, installations and media stations tell the story of 13 centuries of Hamburg's history. Around 100,000 visitors follow in Hamburg's historical footsteps every year.
New demands on a long-standing cultural institution
To ensure that the MHG continues to be a place of wonder, learning, and discovery, the building is undergoing extensive renovations and modernizations. The building is receiving a contemporary facelift, and the permanent exhibition is being redesigned. By the end of 2028, the museum will shine in new splendor across its three floors.
Drees & Sommer was involved in determining the renovation requirements for the City of Hamburg's cultural properties, thus providing the basis for an efficient VgV procedure. User requirements were the focus from the beginning and were incorporated into the plans early on, as were energy optimizations and subsidy organization. As project manager, Drees & Sommer will coordinate all subprojects, parties involved, and the overall schedule in cooperation with Sprinkenhof GmbH's project management team.
