New school campus with elementary school, high school, after-school care center, cafeteria, and quadruple gym

This is where knowledge grows: what was once vacant land is now a vibrant learning environment for around 2,000 students. The new school campus combines an elementary school, high school, after-school care center, cafeteria, lunchtime supervision, and a four-court sports hall under one roof. The meandering building structure creates a variety of learning areas, relaxing quiet zones, and green courtyards. The central meeting place is the cafeteria, which can also be used as an auditorium and event space. The gymnasium, which is one floor below ground level, is located in a separate building. Its wide-span roof is supported by 42-meter-long glued laminated timber beams.

Effective implementation and an impactful building concept

Drees & Sommer supported the client from project management and supervision to tendering and was involved in the awarding of contracts. In order to meet the ambitious construction schedule of around two years, the building was divided into sections of equal size. The parties involved implemented this in a tightly scheduled process with precisely coordinated construction logistics—inspired by the lean management principles from the automotive industry. Planning from a single source ensures a high degree of certainty in terms of costs and deadlines.
