BVG electric bus depot, Berlin
Berlin public transport company moves into the future with Drees & Sommer: New depots enable expansion of large electric bus fleet
The transition to sustainable driving is also progressing in public transportation. With approximately 280 electric buses, BVG operates one of the largest electric bus fleets in Germany. By 2027, approximately one-third of its total fleet of 1,500 vehicles is expected to be electric, and the entire fleet is expected to be emission-free by the early 2030s.
This is an important step towards decarbonizing the bus fleet
BVG is taking significant strides into the future by beginning construction on its first depot on Köpenicker Landstraße. It will be the first new bus depot built in almost 60 years, marking a significant stride towards greater stability and the decarbonization of the bus fleet. The new depot is part of the South-East depot network in Schöneweide and will be operational by 2027.
It will play a central role in maintaining, charging, and parking the new e-buses. The approximately 44,000-square-meter site will include a workshop and service hall, a modern administration building, and parking and charging facilities for around 200 e-buses.
Targeted cooperation with all parties involved
The specialists at Drees & Sommer are providing comprehensive support for the project, including the targeted implementation and optimization of central processes. This also involves remediating a contaminated area. Thus, the site itself will benefit from the transition to sustainable transportation.
